Dr. Michael Cullinan is a Professor in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, where he serves as Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and founding director of the Semiconductor Science and Engineering program. He directs the Nanoscale Design and Manufacturing Laboratory, whose research spans micro- and nanoscale additive manufacturing, nanometrology, and semiconductor advanced packaging, including holographic metasurface nanolithography for volumetric 3D printing of electronics packages, microscale selective laser sintering, and machine-learning-enabled metrology. He founded Texas Microsintering and co-founded Supra Elemental Recovery, and several of his patents have been licensed to industry. Before joining UT in 2013, he was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at NIST. He received his Ph.D. (2011) and S.M. (2008) in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, where he worked in Martin Culpepper’s Precision Compliant Systems Laboratory, and a B.S. in Engineering and B.A. in Economics from Swarthmore College. His honors include the Texas Innovation Conference University Innovator Award (2026), the ASPE Early Career Award (2021), the ASME Kornel F. Ehmann Manufacturing Medal (2020) and SME’s Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award (2016).
